Mary L Byrne and Pasco Troia conducted two workshops to middle school and high school youths discussing “Things that are difficult to talk about”. Conference attendees travelled from all over the country to attend this event celebrating their commitment to loving a substance free life. Youth to Youth is an International Organization.

An actual survivor sharing their personal story of sexual assault provides these advocates a deeper understanding of the important work they will be doing as they begin working with victims in a variety of settings from hospitals, to police stations and in Court.
Jane Johnson participated in a project with highly accomplished NYC Photo Journalist, Kate Ryan. Ms.Ryan’s project depicts the journey of several sexual assault survivors in both print and photographs.
Her photographs will be displayed nationwide.

Mary Bryne and Pasco Troia from SSRI presented a program to second year medical students discussing the possible link between untreated child molestation and adult rape to serious illnesses including cancer, drug, obesity and alcohol addiction.
The purpose of this discussion was to inform medical students to ask patients about their past trauma before focusing on their addictions. Mary's daughter passed away from untreated alcohol/drug addiction, after facing harsh judgement in medical facilities. No one asked her daughter about her past trauma, or the reasons behind her addiction.
It is important for medical students to never underestimate the many impacts of sexual assault.
On September 15, 2017, Jane E. Johnson had the honor of addressing the full Rhode Island Judiciary at the URI Bay Campus, in Narragansett, RI. Invited by Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul A. Suttell, Jane shared her experience with the criminal justice system as a sexual assault survivor.
Jane provided testimony to approximately 80 members of the RI Judiciary sharing her experience with the criminal justice system. Jane's case traveled from the Superior Court to the Supreme Court.
Jane stressed the importance of advocating for and providing adequate support to victims within the criminal justice system. Jane experienced first hand the many struggles most victims face through reporting their experiences of sexual assault and domestic violence. Jane stressed the importance of changing the criminal justice system, to make it more victim focused.

SSRI attended the EGHS Health Fair to provide information about sexual assault and domestic violence. SSRI values the importance of informing communities from all ages and backgrounds.
SSRI team members Lynne Hannon, Wendy Allmendinger, Mary Byrne, Jessica Cinquegrana, and Pasco Troia presented at this weekend workshop for social work students at Salve Regina University.
While several team member shared their personal stories of abuse, Wendy Allmendinger and Lynne Hannon discussed the cycle of domestic violence, barriers to leaving an abusive relationship, safety planning, etc.
Mary L. Byrne shared her story from a “parents perspective”about her daughter’s struggle with addiction after being a victim of child molestation which eventually led to her death.
Mary was part of an impressive group of panelists including several physicians from Kent County Memorial Hospital, Butler Hospital, and the Warren Alpert Medical School-Brown University. Other panelists included a RI Superior Court Judge, Attorney’s, Social Workers, Pharmacists, Police Officers, Former State Senator, radio host and several community mental health providers.
SSRI conducted a workshop for members of Hanscom Air Force Base, in Bedford, MA. This workshop was presented to Sexual Assault Response Coordinators (SARC’s).
SSRI members provided detailed accounts of their experience as survivors of sexual assault. Lynne Hannon provided training on proper procedures for military personnel to report sexual assault, bystander intervention, resources and support.
Lynne Hannon is active in the RING and has served as both a SARC and a victim advocate providing training and education for military personnel. Of note, Lynne provides training at military bases in the capacity as a civilian and a valued member of our team at SSRI.

Sojourner House is a shelter for women that are survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence in Providence, RI. SSRI participated in a staff training for victim advocates. SSRI outlined the ways in which staff can support their clients, providing them with the resources they need to feel safe and supported.
Jane E. Johnson, Mary L. Byrne, Pasco Troia, Wendy Allmendinger, Jessica Cinquegrana and Peter Loss provided a training focusing on survival, trauma, and healing from sexual abuse.
SSRI was invited by Chief Justice of the Family Court, Michael B. Forte. The 2 day conference was attended by Family Court Judges, Attorneys, DCYF Social Workers, Probation Officers, and School Department Administrators and Educators.
